Kathryn Cernauskas has compiled a progressive anthology of Canadian flute music suitable for students under the title The Magical Flute. The anthology is in three volumes, each with a CD. In addition to pieces by Canadian composers it contains a study guide for each piece and original etudes by Kathryn to introduce the student to contemporary techniques. It is published by The Avondale Press. The Royal Conservatory of Music has selected 17 pieces from The Magical Flute including two of Kathryn's own compositions for its new syllabus.

Emotional weight and societal strictures make death a fertile field for art, the medium that allows us to speak the unspeakable. A kind of "anti-Valentine", DEAD Serious tackles this most profound, yet taboo, subject - our own mortality - through a musical (and literal) procession: from fear and fascination, to acceptance and peace, with stops at murder, black humour, sex, and survivors along the way. Acclaimed musicians Rachel Kiyo Iwaasa (piano) and Heather Pawsey (soprano) dig into mirthful and macabre music in an array of works by Canadian and international composers in this funereal, yet funny, foray. Kathryn Cernauskas (flute) joins Heather Pawsey to perform Leslie Uyeda's Stations of Angels . A performance space installation by noted artist S.D. Holman will extend meditations on mortality with phot-based artwork and an interactive altar to which audience members are invited to add their own mementos of their dead.

What does it mean to "go underground"? When we "descend to the depths", what are we searching for, and what will we do with what we find? Mined Over Matter, played out against the stunning and industrial backdrop of the British Columbia Museum of Mining (Britannia Beach, Highway 99), conducts the audience on a metaphysical - and literal - exploration of "mind" and "mined", beginning in the artifact- filled Machine shop, descending through the mysterious and confining spaces of the 1912 tunnels, and finally emerging in the soaring, cathedral-like grandeur of the 1923 gravity-fed concentrator mill. Critically acclaimed musicians Kathryn Cernauskas , flute; AK Coope , clarinet; Rachel Kiyo Iwaasa , piano; and Heather Pawsey , soprano tackle internal reality, questioning, caves and quests through compelling contemporary Canadian chamber music (featuring Violet Archer, James M. Gayfer, Larysa Kuzmenko, Leila Lustig, and Don Ross, among others), culminating in the world premiere of British Columbia composer Leslie Uyeda's Oracle Stones .
Admission to Mined Over Matter is free; however, due to space restrictions, seating is limited and available on a first-come, first-served basis. To book a space, please call the reservations line at 1-604-815-4073, or toll-free at 1-866-640-9881 . Please advise if you have to cancel your seats so that others may be admitted. DRESS ADVISORY: Please dress warmly for underground temperatures, and wear footwear suitable for uneven terrain.
While maintaining busy and separate careers, Kathryn Cernauskas, AK Coope, Rachel Kiyo Iwaasa and Heather Pawsey have collaborated (in varying combinations) on a number of ground-breaking projects in conventional and unconventional venues, including Tasting Notes (Calona Vineyards Winery), Sound Waves and CommOcean! (Vancouver Aquarium), EVEolution ... Another Look at Eden (Sunset Theatre), How(e) Sound (B.C. Museum of Mining), and DEAD Serious (Chapel Arts and Vancouver Crematorium/Hamilton-Harron Funeral Home). They are committed to fearless and innovative approaches to contemporary repertoire in general, and Canadian music in particular.
