The above recording is a MIDI demo version, not the real concert, which was a huge sound! As you listen, imagine a real grand piano playing all of these notes in front of the Bill Reid Canoe sculpture at the International terminal of the Vancouver International Airport!
The Canadian Music Centre has for almost a decade supported the performance of "New Music in New Places." Kathryn Cernauskas and John Oliver presented a concert of music for flute, Disklavier piano, and computer to passers-by at the International airport in Vancouver on December 12, 2004. We performed several classic Canadian works for flute and tape, as well as some works specifically conceived of for Disklavier alone or in combination with flute. I wrote a special piece for the event called Points of Departure that took the anthems of the world and mixed them in with interactive computer music which I controlled and performed in realtime.
This was a fascinating social and musical experiment!
