labyrinthmusic
Welcome to the world of the musical labyrinth.
Here you will discover the new dimension of contemplative experience
that arises from the meeting of contemporary art music
and the timeless sacred geometry of the labyrinth.
Since 1998 composer John Burke has been creating a repertoire of chamber music
inspired by and closely modeling the spiritual journey that is activated when one walks the labyrinth,
especially the medieval design found at Chartres Cathedral in France.
This repertoire includes ambient music appropriate for the walk itself,
as well as related works that maintain a dialogue with the conventional concert platform.
For John Burke personally, the labyrinth is a journey in search of the sacred origins of
Western classical music, and an investigation into how those roots can be renewed and
empowered in a contemporary musical setting. Thus issues related to spirituality, aesthet-
ics, philosophy and consciousness studies will be woven into the fabric of this website,
which it is hoped will become a forum for further discussion, exploration and community.
Let this website become a labyrinth for your own journey....
